April Newsletter 2014

Dear Members,

While I was preparing last month’s newsletter I contemplated whether or not to address the construction of our new clubhouse. Ultimately I decided to not mention anything because there was no new progress from February. I find myself in the same position this month in that I do not have any further updates about when we will begin construction. We have one final fire regulation that unfortunately was only brought to our attention two weeks ago that we are working hard to resolve. We hope we can come to a resolution shortly but unfortunately we do not know how long that might be.

At this point we have decided that however quickly we resolve this issue we will not begin construction before we host the National 45+ Tournament in June. Both the players and our members are excited that we host this event each year and we do not want to jeopardize the quality of the event because of the potential inconveniences that will be associated with the construction.

With May just around the corner we are busy gearing up for our Cinco de Mayo Calcutta Tournament on May 9th and 10th. Dinner on Friday night will feature Mexican food and Margaritas. The player auction, handicapping and bidding for winning teams will follow dinner. Think you can win the tournament? Think you know who will win the tournament? Put your money where your mouth is and join the fun. It was a blast last year! The winners pocketed $400+ in prize money so come on out and see if you can pick a winner. The format and rules are available at the front desk and will also be explained at dinner on the 9th. Contact Calle Hansen at [email protected] if you have any questions.

As the weather heats up the pool is beginning to get busier. When all lanes are occupied members are required to share lanes. Please share your lane with a swimmer who swims at a pace similar to yours. Be sure to stop the swimmer who you are going to share the lane with and let them know you are about to start swimming in their lane. Also check to see if they would like to circle or split the lane in order to avoid any head on collusions.

Finally I would like to thank all of the sponsors for this year’s 45+ tournament. Without their generous support we would not be able to put on such a terrific event. Please help show our appreciation by supporting their businesses. Sponsors for 2014 include: Infinity of Thousand Oaks, Nissan of Valencia, K-Swiss, Sotheby’s, Pick Up Stix, LuggageBase, Pelican Products, Camp Bow Wow, Law Offices of Mark Brenner, Bablot, Conejo Valley Heating and Air and Vivo Pools.

Have a Healthy Day,

John Sutcliffe
General Manager

Fitness Tip

img5 Exercises to Improve your Serve

  1. Standing Oblique Cable Crunch – This exercise can either be done on the cable crossover or functional trainer in the fitness center. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart with the handle next to your head. Keeping your hips stable, flex your abdominals rounding your back. During the downward motion, twist your torso and your elbow toward your opposite knee. Return to the starting position. Perform 3 or 4 sets of 12 to 15 reps for each side.
  2. Hanging Leg Raise – This exercise can be done on the cable crossover in the fitness center. Using the chin up bar, let your legs hang, keeping your feet off of the ground. Slowly lift your knees toward your chest. Be sure to allow your hips to round forward to effectively target the abs. Hold for one second and repeat. Perform 3 or 4 sets of 12 to 15 reps.
  3. Hanging Oblique Crunch – This exercise is similar to the hanging leg raise but instead of lifting your legs straight to your chest you rotate to the right or left to activate the obliques. Perform 3 sets of 12 for each side.
  4. Prone Cobra – Lay face down on the floor. Slowly contract your lower back bringing your upper body off the ground. Try to extend your arms above your head. Hold this position for 30-60 seconds. Perform 2 or 3 sets.
  5. Squat jumps – Stand with your feet shoulder width apart. Slowly lower yourself into the squat position. Drive your feet into the ground, explode up and off the ground. Return to the starting position and repeat. Perform 4 sets of 15 to 20 reps. Squats will help increase explosion and power in both the ground stroke and serve.

Swim Tip

3 Freestyle Swimming Drills:

imgHere are three very basic and simple freestyle drills that will make you a faster swimmer and that you can do on your own. These drills have been around for years…and they work.

  1. Thumb-to-Thigh drill is an excellent drill to help facilitate a proper and complete underwater pull-through.
The Drill: To begin, stand upright on a flat surface, feet about 4-6 inches apart. Drop your arms by your side and mentally mark where your thumbs naturally line up with each thigh. Once swimming freestyle, you want to lightly drag your thumb across this spot during the underwater pull-through. This will insure that your arm is extending behind you. Very simply, this drill taps into your muscle memory. You want to get used to pulling all the way through extending the arm behind you. Initially, this drill may be difficult or tiresome probably because your tricep muscles are weaker than you thought! I recommend adding some tricep work during your dry land/weight workouts.
Practice Set: 10 x 25’s freestyle working on Thumb-to-Thigh, 15 seconds rest between each. Adjust your rest accordingly.
  2. Catch-up drill creates a long stroke by forcing the swimmer to reach out in front during freestyle.
The Drill: NOTE: This drill does rely on your kicking as well. So feel free to wear fins until you feel comfortable with the technique. To begin, push off the wall, both arms extended in front of you. With either arm, begin a freestyle stroke while keep the opposite arm extended out in front of you. Complete the freestyle stroke with the initial arm and touch the extended arm out in front at the end of the recovery portion. Remember, keep the opposite arm extended until the recovery arm touches the hand out in front. Then complete the drill with the opposite arm. So basically you are swimming freestyle with each arm touching the opposite one out in front after recovery. Breath to whichever side is comfortable.
  3. Closed Fist drill is a terrific freestyle drill that helps the swimmer optimize the underwater pull through.
The Drill: The drill is fairly self-explanatory. You are basically swimming freestyle with a closed fist. However, some of us tend to want to cheat just a bit once we discover the lack of "feel" we have for the water when we aren’t using the palms of our hand. And in doing so, we open our fist slightly, similar to that of a Karate Chop. This is not correct! Keep the fist closed! It won’t take long for you to realize how much you have been relying on the palms of your hands for power during freestyle. Initially, you will feel like you are going nowhere when swimming freestyle with a closed fist. And, at first, you will be slower. But you will develop a feel for this as your arms begin to play a significant part in your underwater pull-through. Remember, the pull-through must be complete for this drill to work.
